Cosplay; It’s a process that requires persistence, dedication and skill.
It’s also something that lines the floors of Con events, splashes itself across the internet world and even finds itself hanging in the form of prints on the walls of enthusiasts who support this costume making craft. But it’s more than that, from familiar characters to hardcore structured pieces that involve hours of work, it’s a phenomenon that has swept across the geek and gaming community taking it by storm and establishing itself as this talent infused art form. One which allows the characters that we love on screen, to instead take on their own realistic form and walk around in real life.
The land of the Cosplayer also draws from other areas of expression, bringing together Photographers, Videographers and professionals alike to test their own creativity through documenting not only Con’s but also many of those who attend.
One of those in particular is MLZ Studios, a Videographer who captures Cosplay both filming and promoting it across various platforms and Youtube. So without further ado, here is our interview with MLZ Studios, talking about Cosplay, Inspirations and Favorite aspects of cosplay.
Nikki: First off, I’d like to say that we are insanely stoked to have you on the site, I’ve been a fan ever since I stumbled across the video you put together for Anime Expo 2013 and your footage is PHENOMINAL. So I’m going to start off with the question what gave you the idea to start attending cons through the lens so to speak?
MLZ Studios: The main reason I started going to conventions specifically to film cosplay was because I was inspired by another videographer named acksonl back in 2011. He was probably one of the first videographers to make effective use of the Steadicam for Cosplay Videography. Another big reason I started filming was because I want to inspire cosplayers to be more outgoing and confident. I wanted to promote cosplay to be more widely accepted as a fine and challenging form of art.
N: When you’re attending a con, recording footage and getting to experience it as a whole, what would you say is your favorite part of that and what’s the thing that keeps you going back to these events?
MLZ: My favorite experience is individually working with a variety of talented cosplayers at a con and being able to visually capture their hard work and showcase their costumes through my videos. I go back because I want to reconnect with old friends and also want to work with newer cosplayers.
N: You can tell that you invest a lot of passion into the projects you work on, it’s something that shines out especially in regards to quality, what is it that made you get into Videography?
MLZ: I chose videography over photography because I enjoy slow motion videos. Slow motion videography certainly isn’t for everyone, but it was my go to choice to showcase cosplay.
N: Lastly, what is your favorite aspect of cosplay?
MLZ: My favorite aspect of cosplay is that it is a place for expression and inclusivity. People from all walks of life can enjoy it. I really enjoy the variety of people that I get to meet at conventions because of that.
