Since the release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild there have been countless reviews, articles and videos displaying and discussing the many magical moments that are contained within the game. From 10/10 scores to secret locations that test your skills of logic, there’s no doubt that Breath of the Wild sets the bar high in regards to what it truly means to be an immersive RPG.
The game is challenging and doesn’t shy away from the fact that you need to work in order to succeed, not only in areas like claiming the orbs from shrines but also when you’re exploring or completing elements of the story. This fact is furthered in relation to the games Enemy A.I. one of the most interestingly constructed parts. The A.I. possess this high sense of reactivity to surrounding situations which at times is actually mind boggling to watch, especially when the reaction you gain from a move you’ve made or an action you’ve performed is something that you wouldn’t usually expect to see.
For instance, the fact that when enemies drop their weapon they reach for rocks quickly in order to ensure they still have a way to attack you is ingenious. Or, when also making bigger enemies drop their weapons, they may grab smaller surrounding ones in order to toss them swiftly through the air right towards you. It creates this really dynamic atmosphere which can be as unpredictable as it can be hilarious.
This is just one of the many things that makes it easy to see why this game is so loved. Nintendo really tapped into something that makes you look at A.I. as a whole, observing how far it has come now in the attempt to absorb this great sense of realism and where it might go over the coming years as other titles adapt and push the bounds of Artificial Intelligence even further. It changes things for the players because it no longer seems like you’re walking around surrounded by pixels or in game models, instead there is this sense that Hyrule has existed long before you’ve picked up the controller and that these creatures, animals and people have established their cultures, stores, habitats and ways of living.
In my opinion the Artificial Intelligence is probably the most responsive to be implemented into a title, pinning Breath of the Wild as a truly remarkable piece of art. From trees, dirt and branches to stalking creatures that pin you as their prey, the incredible level of intelligence in this game sets the stage for the player, meaning that there’s never not a moment where you need to be on your guard or carefully planning how you approach situations involving a fight.
